In this paper, we look at what is valuable to one of those, the paying client. Classification schemes, such as taxonomies and typologies, are in many fields used to better understand the terrain in which one is operating. We argue that having such as scheme for the client value in construction projects would be beneficial for better understanding what is valuable for the client. In this paper, we present one that has been made using abductive reasoning based on a scoping study of relevant literature. The paper starts out by presenting different kinds of classification schemes and their characteristics. Then, a set of guiding principles for value classification schemes are introduced, followed by a critique of existing classification schemes considering these. Afterwards, a taxonomy of client value is presented with the reasons for the chosen breakdown structure. Finally, the goodness and completeness of the taxonomy is discussed.
